Huge congratulations to Lisa Jackson and the Steps into Work Supported Internship team with Transport for London for being shortlisted for awards.
Each year, the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) awards recognises organisations who are doing great things to support people into work.
2024 has been a year of strong competition and we were thrilled to have nominations in two categories.
Steps into Work – Shortlisted in the Partnership and Collaboration category 2024
This supported internship scheme run by Shaw Trust and Transport for London supports young neurodivergent people into work. The scheme was developed as part of efforts to tackle the high rates of unemployment among people with disabilities and health conditions, who are twice as likely to be unemployed than those who are not disabled. Watch the video below.
Those who join the programme get the opportunity to work across various Transport for London offices, stations, and piers, giving them a broad experience of working at the world-famous transport network.
Between January 2021 and July 2023, Steps into Work supported 57 young people, with 32 of those achieving paid employment.
Jamie who is now working full time at TfL says “This programme gave me the chance to show what I can do. It’s changed my life.”
Another participant, Jack, praised the scheme for boosting his confidence: “I have learnt lots of new skills such as communication skills, teamwork and organisational skills.”
Lisa Jackson – shortlisted in the Frontline Advisor of the Year Award 2024
Fondly known as ‘Action Jackson’ by colleagues, Lisa has been recognised for going above and beyond in her role supporting people with a physical and/or mental health condition to find work through the Working Win Programme.
Lisa is ranked in the top performing employment specialists in South Yorkshire, and the support she has given to help people at all stages of their journey to find work has exceeded all expectations. Always going the extra mile, it is clear to see how Lisa stood out to the award judges when she;
- Regularly accompanies people to their first work shifts to help them settle in.
- Builds such good relationships with employers that they see her as a colleague.
- Holds popular practical advice group sessions at the Job Centre Plus. (So popular that there is now a waiting list!)
- Offers new colleagues the opportunity to shadow her to learn best practice.
Lisa’s consistent efforts regularly have a life-changing impact for people looking for employment support, with the people she has supported saying:
The ERSA Awards 2024 followed the annual conference of which Shaw Trust was headline sponsor and an exhibitor.
At the conference, our Group Chief Executive Chris Luck delivered a speech which included a video exploring Britain’s employment challenges, and the need for change in order to support the millions of Britons who are being left behind.
In his speech, Chris stressed the need for:
- Partnership working with government, Local Authorities, health services, and community services
- Stronger links between work and health
- Working with employers in new ways to support them to make changes in the workplace
- Social value and giving back to communities
Chris said: “Good work improves health, wellbeing, and finances. But most importantly, good work which aligns with people’s talents and skills, creates purpose and meaning. It provides structure and routine and gives us a reason to get up in the morning by providing hope for the future.”
