Every year Children and Young People Services at Shaw Trust employ a young person who has previously benefitted from one of our programmes, as a Youth Participation Ambassador (YPA). They’re employed in this role for a year to ensure that young people’s voices are included in everything that we do.
The YPA role gives us the chance to offer the opportunity to more young people, giving them a chance to obtain experience and a reference for future roles they may be interested in.
Employing a different YPA each year allows us to obtain different perspectives, and any young person from any of our services in the UK are eligible to apply. This also provides value to our services through the diverse range of applicants and young people we employ in the role.
Last year’s YPA, Leah Bailey, has written a full report on what she got up to whilst in the role which is linked at the bottom for you to read.
Key highlights and takeaways from her report are the five things Leah is proud of in her year:
- Gaining such a unique role allowing her to travel, meet new faces and create links between young people and Shaw Trust.
- Learning important skills such as planning and chairing a meeting, improving soft skills and being able to transfer these into future employment.
- Overcoming barriers to obtain such a role.
- Creating a staff steering group and running meetings helping to bring groups of networks together.
- The pieces of work that she contributed towards that will be there forever. Like the Youth Participation Pledge webpage: Pledge – Shaw Trust
Five things that Leah has learnt in her year as YPA:
- How to be more confident.
- How to write relevant and proper agendas.
- Being comfortable travelling via train.
- How to work independently.
- How important youth participation is.
These are just many of the important lessons and skills that have allowed Leah to walk away from the role with a vast array of new skills and experiences that will support her next steps in the world of work. Interviews for the next YPA 2024/25 took place very recently and we appointed Ramizah Tabiya who will be joining mid-September. We look forward to introducing you and sharing their journey as the next YPA.
