Tom’s journey to employment

Tom was referred to the Thrive into Work programme by the Job Centre after relocating to Coventry. He had been out of work for a few months, facing challenges such as low confidence, anxiety, and depression. Despite his keen interest in securing a job in customer service or hospitality, he had no prior experience in these industries, and employers were not responding to his applications. His struggle with mental health made the job search even more difficult and he was demoralised and low motivated.
Recognising the importance of Tom’s mental well-being, we signposted him to the Wellbeing Academy, where he received valuable support to improve his mental health. Additionally, we encouraged him to join a face-to-face support group, offering him a safe space to share his experiences and build his confidence around people.
To strengthen his chances in the job market, we helped Tom update his CV, tailored it to the hospitality and customer service industries, and guided him in preparing cover letters. We also reached out to employers on his behalf, advocating for his skills and determination. Preparing for interviews was
another key focus, and we worked closely with Tom to ensure he felt ready to present himself confidently.
Through employer engagement and job market navigation, Tom secured a role in hospitality. Initially, he started with 20 hours per week, but as his confidence grew, he gradually increased his hours up to 35 per week. This steady progression demonstrates just how much his self-assurance and capability have improved.
For 13 weeks, we provided in-work support to ensure Tom remained stable in his role, helping him navigate any challenges. His journey is a testament to his resilience and the effectiveness of a holistic approach to employment support
