JB’s journey to a career in nature conservation

JB’s journey toward fulfilling her dream began last November when she joined Thrive into Work, she was seeking employment but unsure of the direction to take. JB has applied for different job from administrative roles to working as a Teaching Assistant. However, her true passion lay in nature conservation, working with plants and animals in outdoor settings. She pictured herself contributing to a nature institution, hoping to work at Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve, part of Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. With the help of JN, her Thrive into Work Employment Specialist , JB started focusing on her ideal career path, recognising the skills that she already had to start her into work journey.
Determined to gain relevant experience, JB began volunteering at Charter House – Coventry Historic Trust in July 2024. She participated in gardening tasks such as planting, weeding, and maintaining the grounds, ensuring the garden remained in excellent condition. She also helped create wreaths and willow lantern sculptures for an event.
These activities helped improve her practical skills in land management, horticulture, and environmental stewardship, and drive to work in conservation. Her qualifications in botany and zoology, acquired at the University of Johannesburg, added to her expertise, making JB a strong candidate for roles in nature conservation.
After months of tailoring her CV, applying for jobs, and writing personal statements, her Employment Specialist shared an opportunity with the local city council with JB. Initially hesitant and not confident she could get it, JB decided to apply with the encouragement and support of her Employment Specialist and wrote a tailored personal statement. She was subsequently shortlisted and through interview preparation JB secured the job as a Casual Outdoor Education & Activity Leader. Her role allows her to work outdoors while educating and engaging people in environmental activities, a perfect fit for her skills and interests.
