From academia to uncertainty

After twenty years at the height of academia, Maximus – a former Oxford associate lecturer – suddenly found himself out of work. This sudden halt in his highly successful career took its toll, affecting Maximus’ mental health, confidence and motivation.

That’s when Wellness in Work, part of Shaw Trust’s employment services, stepped in.

Beginning again in business

An Employment Specialist began working with Maximus, giving him advice, information and guidance – as well as some much-needed mental health support. The aim? To balance meaningful work with his wellbeing.

Soon, Maximus had a plan: a new venture, delivering online lectures. With the help of his Employment Specialist, he set to work. Together, they drew up a business strategy, designed the platform and even developed some presentations. Calling on his expertise working in universities such as Colombia and SOAS, Maximus wrote the lecture content, making sure it was clear and engaging for students and professionals alike. His goal was to go global, so he also looked into market research, price structuring and delivery formats for his courses.

But that’s not all. While exploring his entrepreneurial side, Maximus worked with his Employment Specialist to develop his CV and cover letter, empowering him to apply for future roles at leading universities.

A second chance at success

Maximus’ idea took off – and is now a successful business. Today, he works as a self-employed, global lecturer. He has newfound professional independence, a reliable stream of income, and a wealth of confidence.

His story is a powerful reminder of how anyone can bounce back with enough support and determination – and how employment support can change lives for the better.
