From zero-hours uncertainty to a full-time future at 50: Georgia’s story

With three children to think about, Georgia‘s zero-hour contract was a far cry from the stability and certainty she needed. Not being able to depend on regular shifts meant Georgia, 50, needed to rely on Universal Credit to get by. And being tied into the contract also had an impact on her options – making it more difficult to find secure, full-time work.

Like many people over 50, Georgia knew she had valuable skills and years of experience to offer, but finding an employer willing to look beyond age and see that potential wasn’t always easy. Something had to change, so Georgia was referred to Connect to Work West London.

Her goal was to find to work in the transport sector – an area she was very experienced in, and knew well. But behind the scenes, Georgia was finding her dyslexia, dyspraxia and autism were leaving her feeling overwhelmed. She also worried they were having an impact on opportunities, like timed activities and unfamiliar interview environments.

Joining Connect to Work West London finally gave Georgia the support and reassurance she needed. She was already knowledgeable and passionate about the transport sector – she just needed a helping hand with her confidence and the practical parts of job hunting.

Supported by her employment specialist, Ben Onyeka, Georgia worked on managing her anxiety and building her interview skills. And each time she interviewed but didn’t get the role, she went into the next interview stronger. In fact, her resilience became one of her strongest qualities.

After months of hard work applying and interviewing for roles, Georgia finally got the big break she deserved. She secured a role as a full-time customer service gateline assistant at Southwestern Railway, using her excellent people skills and warm personality to guide customers towards the help they need.

In her new role, Georgia has already made a positive impact on her employer, who calls her ‘full of life and a breath of fresh air’. And with renewed confidence, improved mental health and the stability she’s craved for so long, it’s no surprise Georgia’s feeling happier, too. She’s thriving in her new role and glowing with pride.
