We are launching a new campaign encouraging shoppers to buy Christmas gifts from their charity shops. The video campaign champions second-hand gifting, which is not only more environmentally friendly, but also helps to support the work of charities.
The campaign which will be live the first week in December, highlights three simple ways shoppers can make a difference this Christmas; by buying second-hand; donating items; and encouraging others consider purchasing some of their Christmas gifts from a charity shop.
Renata Graver, Director of Charity Retail Shops and Enterprise Activities said;
“We’re so proud to launch our Christmas campaign, The Story of Freddy the Teddy, which was filmed in our Bath charity shop. This campaign powerfully communicates that our shopping choices at Christmas can make a huge difference. Charity Shops like Shaw Trust sell gifts that give back: buying second-hand not only saves money and benefits the environment, it also supports the vital work of charities like ours. We believe that every gift -like every person- has value and potential. And every single gift you buy helps us support hundreds of thousands of people across the UK each year, providing opportunities in education, training, and employment.”
It’s estimated that on average, each person will spend £362 on Christmas gifts this year, with UK shoppers expected to spend over £2bn on second-hand gifts during the festive period.
Pre-loved gift sales are projected to make up 10.2% of the UKs Christmas gift market this year, according to research from Retail Economics, which also found that more than half (53%) of consumers aged 18-45 buy second-hand items at least once a month. According to a 2024 Statista report, popular second-hand Christmas gifts include books (45%), jewellery (28%), and toys and games (28%), demonstrating the growing appetite for ‘preloved’ items.
