Shaw Trust supports Tesco with their Movement to Work disability placement programme. This programme supports people aged between 18-30, who live with a disability or health condition. 2023 saw a 22% year on year increase in the number of people undertaking a work placement with Tesco.
Before starting the 2023 placements, Ann Thompson (National Account Manager) reflected on recommendations from the 2022 lessons learnt. In doing so, she suggested that the Tesco managers undertook Neurodiversity Awareness training. Ultimately, this made sure that they had the knowledge and skills to support people on placement, as well as existing colleagues and new starters. Three training sessions were delivered and to date 10% more Participants have secured employment with Tesco this year following their work placement.
“Tesco provide over 50 opportunities to colleagues who enter employment through our Movement to Work programme. We have made excellent progress with regards to physical accessibility but spotted gaps in our understanding of how to support neurodivergent colleagues that had not been fully met by existing training. With this in mind, Shaw Trust developed a bespoke training session, delivered flexibly around the needs of our business and colleagues. We were extremely pleased with the training and colleagues scored it above 95% – unprecedented!” – Tesco Manager
