At Shaw Trust, your donations can go further, thanks to Gift Aid. This government scheme allows UK charities like us to reclaim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate, at no extra cost to you!
What is Gift Aid and how does it work?
Gift Aid is a tax relief provided by the UK government that allows charities to reclaim the basic rate of tax on donations made by UK taxpayers.
When you donate items to one of our charity shops, you can make a difference with Gift Aid. Once we sell your items, we’ll notify you of the amount raised, and with your permission, we’ll claim an additional 25% from the government on the sale proceeds of your donated goods.
- Complete a Declaration: This is a quick form that allows us to claim Gift Aid on your donations. You can fill it out in-store when dropping off items or online.
- Once signed up, every future donation you make can be eligible for Gift Aid, so you won’t have to fill out the form again. Just let us know if your tax situation changes.
Gift Aid works if:
- You are a UK taxpayer.
- You have paid or will pay enough tax to cover the amount claimed on all your donations in that tax year.
Why use Gift Aid?
It makes a significant impact. Every year, Shaw Trust helps thousands of people access employment, training, and independence. By simply opting into Gift Aid, you can increase your donation by 25%, helping us continue to support individuals in need, without any extra cost to you.
Can I Gift Aid if I’m retired?
Yes, as long as you pay enough tax on your savings, pensions, or investments to cover the Gift Aid on your donations.
What if I’m a higher rate taxpayer?
If you pay higher or additional rate tax, you can claim back the difference between the basic rate and your higher rate on your donation. You can either keep this rebate or donate it back to Shaw Trust!
What if I stop paying tax?
Please let us know if your tax circumstances change, and you stop being eligible for Gift Aid. It’s important to update us so we don’t claim incorrectly.
Ready to Boost Your Donation?
To start making your donations go even further, ask one of our team members in-store when dropping off your donations.
Our shops are grateful for every donation. All shops accept good quality men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing and accessories. They also accept quality homewares, bric-a-brac, books, CDs, DVDs, and more.
Together, we can make a bigger difference!
