225 colleagues are currently completing an apprenticeship alongside their roles at Shaw Trust. To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2023, we caught up with Lisa and Alfie who told us the reason behind starting an apprenticeship and how they are finding it.
Why did I decide to start an apprenticeship?
My line manager and I always discuss my personal development wants and needs in our quarterly reviews together. One of the key themes that kept reoccurring was my want to better understand the more technical aspects of learning and development. After a little research and discussions within the Learning and Development team, we agreed the level 5 Learning and Development Consultant/Business Partner apprenticeship was the best way to meet these development needs and aspirations.
How is it going?
When I first started the apprenticeship, it took me a little while to get into the routine of setting aside time to complete my off-the-job hours. It also took me a while to get into learner mode again. As I have continued with the apprenticeship, I am growing to love it. What I enjoy most is it offers me the opportunity to step outside of my current ‘trainer’ mindset and really focus on Learning and Development from a strategic perspective within Shaw Trust. It also supports reflective practice so as I am completing my daily role, I can link it to the learning I have completed.
I want to mention just how lucky I am in my role. The wider Learning and Development Team are genuinely there to support me. As I progress through modules each and every person within the team have offered their time, knowledge and expertise to support me and for that I am eternally grateful.
Why did I decide to start an apprenticeship?
I didn\’t like the idea of Uni, but many jobs weren\’t accepting me straight out of college as I didn\’t have relevant experience. Even though I hadn\’t heard much about them before, I decided to give apprenticeships a chance.
How is it going?
This apprenticeship has allowed me to ease into work, gain an extra qualification and live independently. The off the job training went perfectly alongside my main work, and I was fully supported by my team when needed.
Now I\’ve finished (with a distinction) and have been fully employed within the same team. I\’ll be looking at starting a higher-level apprenticeship soon to continue my career development.
