SE’s journey from redundancy to success
SE, a software engineer, sought our service after experiencing redundancy, a life event that had a significant impact on his confidence and mental well-being. SE often mentioned struggling with recurring thoughts of self-doubt and low self-esteem and ultimately was unsure how to enter the job market again after numerous failed attempts.
SE faced a dual challenge. Firstly, they were understandably grappling with the emotional and practical consequences of redundancy – something that is never easy for anyone. This coincided with the stress and pressures of buying a house, creating a sense of being overwhelmed and anxious.
Secondly, they experienced a decline in self-confidence, particularly concerning job interviews. Having previously found securing employment relatively straightforward, they now felt the software engineering landscape had become more competitive, and he doubted his abilities to navigate it successfully with his limited skill set. This lack of confidence was a major barrier to his job search and exacerbated his pre-existing anxieties.
To address these multiple challenges, we provided comprehensive and tailored employment support often reviewing as we go to ensure the support was effective. This support included CV enhancement, interview skills development, job search strategies and confidence building. Integral to this support was the recognition and reinforcement of the work he was doing in talking therapies with Hannah. By acknowledging and integrating the strategies he was learning to manage his anxiety, the employment support became more effective and holistic.
The turning point in SE’s journey was his transformation from fearing interviews to actively and successfully engaging in them. Often shifting his perspective to take the learnings away from interviews to be able to apply them to future ones.
Initially, he expressed significant anxiety and self-doubt and felt he was having recurrent interviews where he noted poor performance. However, as he implemented the strategies and techniques learned in our sessions and reinforced by his therapy with Hannah, his confidence grew exponentially. This newfound confidence was reflected in his ability to secure multiple interviews, including a promising opportunity with a popular company. Ultimately, he received a job offer, marking a significant victory in his job search. SE also reported further interviews upcoming mentioning that he was now dealing with the feelings of feeling overwhelmed from being spoilt for choice. They acknowledged the huge progress they have made and added that they would rather have the problems of having too much choice than having none at all.
The impact of this journey is heartfelt as this is someone many can relate too at some point in their lives. SE not only regained employment but also experienced a substantial improvement in their overall well-being. Their anxiety decreased, their self-esteem increased, and they felt empowered to take control of their own career trajectory. This story illustrates once again the transformative power of holistic assistance in helping individuals overcome obstacles and realise their professional aspirations.
