Staying Close
Working with young care leavers in the county to help build confidence, strength, resilience and develop a positive mindset
What is Staying Close?
Staying close is a pilot scheme funded by the Department for Education which aims to support young people leaving care from residential and semi-supported accommodation.
Our team of coaches work with young care leavers in the county to help build confidence, mental strength, resilience and a positive mindset. Staying close helps young people build their ability and skills to live independently.
We believe our young people hold the power within, and coaching helps them tap into this. Staying close coaching is a partnership practice with a young person or group which aims to assist them to identify areas within their life that can create meaning and improve wellbeing and resilience.
Our coaching is based on honesty, trust and respect in a non-judgmental and equal relationship.
Workshops
We offer workshops and individual support to empower young people to reach their full potential. Our sessions are themed around:
- Perseverance.
- Empowerment.
- Overcoming difficulties.
- Self-efficacy.
- Challenge.
Sessions will be anything from four weeks onwards and this is led by the partnership between the young person and their coach after assessing their requirements.
Through coaching you can
Be empowered.
Help someone realise their potential.
Work together to set goals and challenges.
See life through a new lens.

What our participants have to say
Meet the Coaches
Ghadeer Aldhafeeri
Hi, I’m Ghadeer Aldhafeeri, and I absolutely love what I do as a resilience and wellbeing coach. Wellbeing is a huge part of my everyday life, and it’s something I’m really passionate about. I’ve spent the last five years working closely with young people, and it’s been such a rewarding experience watching them grow and overcome challenges.
When I’m not working, you can usually find me powerlifting or experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. I also love to travel and explore different cultures—it really broadens my perspective. Another big passion of mine is learning new languages; it’s such a fun way to connect with the world around me!
Heather Wilson
Hi there, my name is Heather Wilson and I am a Resilience & Wellbeing Coach. I love, love, love my job. How many people can say that when asked? For me it brings meaning, and value. Advocating for young people is something I am passionate about and have been for a long time. I have worked with young people in various settings over the past few years, working in colleges, education, supported accommodation and on a one-to-one basis.
I believe I’m a good coach because I recognise potential in others and am passionate about helping them reach it. I’m creative both at work and at home, where I love designing and upcycling furniture. My colourful house reflects my constant projects, and I enjoy turning old items into something new.
Ella Steptoe
My name is Ella, and I have been working with young people for about 18 months. Being part of their journey and helping them discover the best version of themselves is incredibly rewarding to me. In my free time, you’ll often find me exploring TK Maxx or heading out on a camping adventure.
I consider myself an aimless wanderer—it keeps me grounded and helps align my thoughts when things get overwhelming. This is something I’ve learned from my role, and it’s a lesson I hope to pass on to the young people I work with: when you find something that works for you, hold on to it!
