Shaw Trust members of staff are given the opportunity to volunteer for two days each year. Volunteering is important because it not only benefits the organisation or community you volunteer for, but it also enriches the lives of the people volunteering and contributes to the overall wellbeing of communities and society.
In May I was lucky enough to visit Banham Zoo to volunteer. I wasn’t on my own with this one. I was lucky enough to share my first experience of volunteering with some other members of the Shaw Trust team from Norfolk, including the work and health programme and young people’s services.
We chose a great day, and the weather was on our side. Wearing our volunteer vests, it was time to get to work. We were split into two groups as there were around 12 volunteers. My groups first task of the day was to de-weed and sweep the Snow Leopard enclosure. The Snow Leopard was locked away for this, so we were safe, and it was really nice to help the Zoo and give something back. It was quite cool being inside the enclosure at my childhood Zoo. I could picture a younger Leah looking in amazement at how big the Snow Leopard is.
During our break we got to watch a small animal show which was really cool! The show comprised of a variety of animals, with my personal favourites being the rats or Pedro the Armadillo.
I got to spend some time with other staff which was great as I volunteered not too long after starting with Shaw Trust. Overall, it was a great experience, spending time getting to know colleagues and giving back to something good. I would encourage anyone who is able to volunteer some time to do so, as the positive benefits of volunteering are great.
