Feltham Youth Offenders Institute
We believe everyone has the right to a future. This belief is at the centre of the work we do at Feltham Young Offenders Institute.
Working in partnership
Working in partnership with Youth Custody Service colleagues we provide education to the boys and young men aged 15 to 18, delivering innovative approaches centred on education, training, careers advice and resettlement support.
This includes:
- Preparing for and taking national exams like GCSEs, AS Levels and vocational qualifications
- Diagnostic assessments to recognise special educational needs
- Enrichment activities focusing on personal development and social skills
- Delivering workshops to build skills and awareness of career optionsEngaging with local employers to link individuals in custody to the community
Developing education
Like at any school or college, we employ teachers who develop curriculum and prepare lessons; the difference being it’s all done within the prison.
The majority of the boys have had a poor relationship with education in the past and engaging them takes patience and understanding. 50% of students at Feltham are assessed as having special educational needs and other boys the teachers believe have undiagnosed needs are also assessed.
Nationally recognised qualifications
In 2023, 30 learners sat 178 exams including GCSEs, AS levels and BTECs. Given the opportunity to achieve nationally recognised exams benefits their future and the opportunity to experience the same exams as every other child in their age group.
We further work with our local employer networks to increase engagement and link individuals in custody to the community to secure better outcomes.
