In May 2024, two young people from our Homes2Inspire provision supported Dave Beadnall, Head of Risk, Compliance and Mobilisation with an empowered shopping experience.
The project involved the young people reviewing the floor plans of two new homes for Homes2Inspire, and then finding the furniture, fixtures and equipment for each home and making suggestions to the new home managers on what would work best.
They did this through an empowered shopping experience providing young people with an opportunity to roam the furniture showroom, sit on the sofas, lie on mattresses and have a good explore of various wardrobes, drawers, and desks whilst also gaining some experience of budget management.
Gary, the owner of ‘A touch of furniture’ hosts the event, providing a light lunch whilst we review the shopping list and gain feedback from young people. This is a great opportunity for our young people, and forms part of any mobilisation for new homes.
When speaking to Dave about the event he said “Thank you very much for participating in the empowered shopping experience. The two young people who attended were excellent ambassadors for the Youth Participation Group and fully supported us with good enthusiasm and energy, which was very much appreciated”.
When speaking to one of the young people about their involvement they said “I love shopping, and it was great to see everything that is needed for a new home. I can’t wait to visit the house and see it all set up; the home definitely needed the double recliner seats with cooler”.
This piece of work not only shows just how important it is to obtain views from young people in areas that affect them but also shows how young people are equipped and knowledgeable to contribute successfully to experiences such as these.
