UK Youth Parliament enables young people to use their passion to change the world for the better. Open to 11 to 18-year-olds to run for election, once elected as members of the Youth Parliament (MYP) by their local communities it provides opportunities for young people to bring about social change through meaningful representation and campaigning.
The latest set of elections recently took place and Gloucestershire had 14 young people submit their manifestos and campaign to be elected.
The three elected young people covering the region were:
- Zafeera Karim; Gloucester and Forest
- Christopher Johnson; Cheltenham and Tewkesbury
- Bretta Lane; Stroud and Cotswolds.
Zafeera chose to campaign for addressing inequalities by engaging in local discussions, surveys and using social media to address issues in mental health, climate change, and education. Zafeera is looking to address the absence of fundamental amenities in deprived areas through liaison with local representatives tackling crime rates and mental health concerns. Zafeera also wants to campaign for lowering the voting age to 16 and fostering political literacy in schools.
Christopher is looking to make a positive change and represent the views of young people in Cheltenham and Tewkesbury. Christopher would like to tackle access to public transport in the local area by making it free for young people, increasing access to more areas whilst supporting them during the cost-of-living crisis, will improve the lives of young people in the area.
Bretta is campaigning for better mental healthcare for young people in the area as well as looking at ways to improve their educational prospects. Bretta will be connecting with local young people and wants to understand what their concerns are and the best way to voice these with to the right audience. Finally, through being an MYP Bretta is hoping to correct the injustice of young people’s representation within society.
The elected young people began their term on 2 April 2024 and will remain as the elected MYP for their respective area for two years.
